Losing my 15-year-old son to suicide has been an unimaginable journey of pain and heartache. He was a beautiful soul – intelligent, talented, and full of life. His smile could light up a room, and his laughter was infectious. He cared deeply for his friends and brought joy to everyone around him.
Then, in an instant, everything changed. Without any warning signs, I found myself facing the unthinkable – a reality that no parent should ever have to endure. I have experienced a pain that penetrates every fibre of my being, shattering my mind, body, and soul.
We want to bring hope to young people, so that in any circumstances, they choose life. No child should feel that ending their life is the only option, and no other family should endure this unbearable loss.
From our heartache, an incredible group of passionate individuals came together to create the Tyler Abdul Foundation – a beacon of hope dedicated to preventing young suicides, honoring my son’s memory.
Our starting point was to run a survey to understand the state of young people’s mental health and the challenges faced. 233 people – adults and young people – completed the survey, and the results were shocking!
Young people were calling for a safe space “The Treehouse”, which they then collectively designed.
We want to see The Treehouse come to life. The funding will cover refurb of a building, entertaining equipment such as a pool-table, some staff costs, and costs of providing young people with something to eat.
Ahead of the release of GCSE and A-level results, we want to unleash a campaign of hope. This can be a time of disappointment, hopelessness and despair, and our aim is to build resilience and remind young people that there are many ways to succeed. The campaign will be via social media, merchandise and posters at hot-spot stations.
To build communication and collaboration to enhance relationships, we will host various in-person workshops that will benefit young people in our community. These will range from wood-working to candle-making.
